Goal Setting Tips with YFE: Erin Anacker

It’s official.  After today the “Newness” of the year will fade away. Although goal setting is a year round deal for me, this will bring an end to my incessant harping on the theme of Setting Goals for the New Year. (Hold for applause)

Before I switch to a new focus in February, I wanted to share this interview with Erin Anacker of PixologyRules. It’s a long one, so grab a cup of tea, a notebook and skip to about 10 minutes in for the juicy stuff. This video originally aired in Young Female Entrepreneur’s Thursday Livestream.

Success Tip: Whether you run your own business or work for someone else….BE AN ENTREPRENEUR! Work it like you own it, run it like you mean to take over the world.

This vid is relevant to how you work. If you checked out the Big Hairy Authentic Goal Planner, then surely you noticed that only about 1/10 is focused on work. There’s more to life and Erin tells us about that.  What I really loved about Erin is how many times in 20 minutes she uses the word INTENTION.  Count ’em.  She clearly suggest that above all, be intentional about doing what makes you feel great, rather than “shoulding” all over yourself.  Here are a few other nuggets I picked up on:

1. Give freely – Kick competition to the curb

Collaboration is a big deal. Sometimes we get caught up in being the best on the team, keeping all the clients to ourselves or whatever we think it takes to get to the top. In reality, that just causes more angst. Instead, embrace your competitors, learn from them, love them, share with them. The Universe has a way of reminding me of what is true.  So as I’m writing this post, my ADHD kicked in, and I hopped over to Facebook just in time to catch sight of this status post from Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love.

2. Connect

Erin suggested that she connects with one new person a week. Whether it’s a coworker that you’ve never really talked to, a manager that you look up to or another business owner who you think is doing something cool for the world. It’s a great idea to make these authentic connections, without any attachment to how it turns out. What do I mean by that? Don’t go into it thinking about how this person can help you or what you can get out of it. Just show up, tell them what made you reach out  and try to get a sense of who they really are. Trust me, good things will happen without you ever having to ask.

3. Set Boundaries

A more practical tip for those wanting to be productive, is to simply set boundaries in your work day. Do you check email 50 times a day? Answer the phone every time it rings? STOP IT! Don’t let the electrons control you, man. They’ll take over you mind. It’s a conspiracy!  No, but really. Set hours in your day during which you’ll do things like check email and make/take calls. I contacted a web designer yesterday who replied, “Sure I’d love to talk. My conference hours are 2-3 6-7:30.”  Much respect to her for setting clear boundaries. That tells me that she’s muy productive, and I like that in a contractor. If you’re the type that forgets to take a break, use InstantBoss to remind yourself to step away at regular intervals throughout the day.

Bookkeeping is one of those essential elements of a business. Bookkeeping is the only part of the business that can tell you if you are successful and whether you are making money or not.
